Until now, a method for determining the financial residual value of building products and capital goods has been lacking. While precisely the understanding of the financial residual value can provide breakthroughs in the circular economy. In the summer of 2021, the Koninklijke Metaalunie, FME and the Ministry of Economic Affairs launched an investigation into a market- and government-supported central determination method for financial residual value of industrially manufactured products.

This has resulted in a calculation model (the calculation model and underlying report can be downloaded from the FME website) that calculates the reuse value at the product level and the recycling value at the material level. The ultimate goal of the calculation model is to replace the theoretical financial residual value of products with the real market value. However, this must be based on concrete transactions. Determining the theoretical financial residual value can provide more transaction data and thus accelerate the market's transition to residual values determined on the basis of market value.
