Circular climate control systems: business models and a roadmap for the sector

HVAC systems are essential for the comfort, health, and functionality of buildings. Heating, cooling, and ventilation systems also play a key role in improving energy performance and facilitating the transition to a natural gas-free built environment. At the same time, it is becoming increasingly clear that the materials used in these systems have a significant environmental impact. Approximately 40% of the total environmental impact of buildings is attributable to systems, with HVAC systems accounting for the largest share. This is due, among other things, to CO2 emissions during production and use and to the use of scarce and critical raw materials (read more).

Circularity offers an opportunity to reduce this impact and increase the sector’s resilience. At the same time, circular alternatives can pave the way for new revenue models. These challenges call for new insights and collaboration throughout the supply chain. As part of theMOOI program Circular Climate Installations, we are organizing a series of webinars to update market stakeholders on the latest developments in the field of circular climate installations. This first webinar is organized by Circonnect and DGBC, in collaboration with TVVL.

What to Expect

• Olaf Groen (Aldenkamp Installatietechnieken B.V.), as chair of the product team, will present the recent update to the HVAC roadmap.
• Emma Koster (Utrecht University of Applied Sciences) introduces a theoretical framework for circular business models for HVAC systems. Using this framework, she discusses insights from the fact sheets developed as part of the MOOI project and uses practical examples to demonstrate how this model can be applied in specific projects.
• Thomas van Daal (Itho Daalderop) applies this framework to real-world scenarios by demonstrating how circular principles have been incorporated into two specific products: a heat pump and a ventilation unit. He discusses how circularity was integrated into the product design and what lessons were learned from this process.

Finally, we will discuss the refinement of the Roadmap for Circular HVAC Systems and what this means for market stakeholders. This roadmap outlines a path toward 2030 for the circular transition of the HVAC sector. The roadmap was developed by a product group of experts within the Circular Manufacturing Industry, in close collaboration with supply chain partners, policymakers, and the Circular Construction Economy Transition Team. The session will be moderated by Iris Grobben – Program Manager at Circonnect.
