Fifty years ago, it was very common to fix things when they broke. Vacuum cleaners, toasters, washing machines often lasted for decades. With increased prosperity, the habit of repairing has disappeared. What is broken often disappears into the trash. Welcome to the disposable economy.
How can things be done differently? What does a world look like where we repair stuff instead of throwing it away? What mechanisms perpetuate the culture of throwing things away? What can we do to make repair attractive again? Will the European "Right to Repair" help, or the new EU Ecodesign Directive? How do you entice consumers to repair and what does it require from designers? And what is the secret of companies that use repair successfully, such as Fairphone and Patagonia?
On Monday, Nov. 13, there will be a Meet-Up in Delft where Centre for Sustainability will engage with entrepreneurs, creatives, scientists and administrators.
