Application
For a future-proof and resilient economy, it is essential that (future) designers, entrepreneurs and other professionals be trained to be critical about the need for certain products and services, and to be able to think at a systems level about fulfilling functions and needs.
Retrospective knowledge session Refuse & Rethink
On April 15, Rijkswaterstaat together with Partners for Innovation organized a knowledge session on Refuse & Rethink to raise awareness of these circular strategies within (design) education.
For a future-proof and resilient economy, it is essential that (future) designers, entrepreneurs and other professionals are trained to be critical about the need for certain products and services, and that they can think at a system level about fulfilling functions and needs. There is also much to be gained in the business world, because within the circular economy the emphasis is still very much on recycling and reuse.
Experts on the subject
- Dr. Ir. Inge Oskam, lecturer circular design & entrepreneurship, HvA
Inge Oskam has been a lecturer at the Hogeschool van Amsterdam (HvA) since 2007 and has led the lectureship Circular Design & Entrepreneurship since 2015. She received her PhD from the Free University on research into the role of stakeholder interaction in the development of sustainable business models.
In her contribution, Inge Oskam presented Rethink as a circular strategy to get to the root of the problem. Then, in a workshop, participants got to work concretely with the Rethink tool.
- Laura Niessen, PhD candidate, Maastricht University
Laura Niessen is working PhD candidate on the topic of sustainable consumption (sufficiency or consuming) by companies and circular business models, in the ERC-funded Circular X project of the Maastricht Sustainability Institute.
Laura Niessen inspired participants with a series of companies that are committed to consumerism within their business strategy.
Follow-up steps
Finally, the speakers reflected with participants on what is needed now to increase attention to design strategies like Refuse & Rethink. It quickly became clear that more practical examples are needed from companies that have already started. The Business for Sufficiency database developed by Laura Niessen provides a valuable starting point for this.
