Packaging is everywhere. Most visible in the supermarket: from food to cosmetics to cleaning supplies. But naturally found in many other places: in construction, e-commerce or healthcare. Packaging contributes to the shelf life and protection of the packaged product and has an important function in communication and marketing. But most packaging is single-use and the amount of packaging waste is now 180 kilograms per inhabitant of Europe annually, increasing rapidly and accounting for 36 percent of the entire waste stream.
To stop this, we need more circular packaging. But what is that? How do you make the right choice? What steps are important? With circular packaging you not only design a product-packaging combination or possibly a service, but also a matching business model and you look at the whole chain. The aim is to retain as much value as possible during the entire life cycle of a product-packaging combination.
The circular design process starts with Rethink or Refuse. During this workshop, the Hogeschool van Amsterdam will show how to do this using appealing examples. Next, the Sustainable Packaging Knowledge Institute (KIDV) will explain what the other R-strategies are and what the main developments are regarding sustainable packaging. Finally, CIRCO will share learnings from CIRCO Tracks that have taken place around packaging within value chains: including foils in construction, ornamental packaging and medical packaging.
You will be challenged in this session to look at packaging differently. Get inspiration from interesting practical examples and join the discussion about the dilemmas and challenges. The workshop is particularly interesting for buyers and product managers of SMEs who are indirectly involved with packaging or still have little knowledge about packaging. It also promises to be an interesting afternoon for designers who want to know more about making packaging sustainable.
